like the psp you can turn WLAN on and search for a connection, could the ps3 do that?

Yes.Any ps3 can search for wireless internet WPA/WEP.I also think it has a farther range than the psp. And it takes wired connection also.

No the PS3 doesn't have a WLAN switch, its kind of built into it, when you search for a internet connection it tells you if it has a security setting or not.But if you don't want internet on, you can delete your internet setting on it to basicly disable the internet, and then search again and choose your same connection.
