Just connect your internet up to the system and you can get online! Under Settings there's a "Network Settings" option which you can set.
The PS3 supports a wifi connection (via a wireless router) or a wired connection (directly from your modem or through a router).
So if you want your PS3 and PC to be online at the same time, get a router of some sort (wired is fine if the PC and PS3 are close enough). If they're farther apart, get a wireless router.
EDIT: Most modems are simply modems, though it's possible yours is a router. In most cases, you'll have to buy a router. Wired routers run about $ 20 (you don't need gigabit). Wireless are higher, at about $ 50-60 (you just need a wireless-g router. don't bother getting wireless-n).

you get a router at best buy then you configure all your settings on your ps3 to get the wireless or wired signal from the router. but yeah the best place to get a router is at best buy
