Can u play ps2 games on the 320gb ps3 system?

No, only certain Fat models were backward compatible. None of the new Slim models are backward compatible.

Edit: Additional software is not required to play the PS2 games on the backward compatible models. I currently own one of the 80GB Fat backward compatible models and never had to download any additional software. I just insert the game and played, no additional downloads required.

no, only the first 2 (maybe 3?) models of the Fat PS3 included backward compatibility with PS2. I am sorry.

No, your 320GB PlayStation 3 is not going to be backwards compatible with PlayStation 2 games. http://us.playstation.com/support/answer/index.htm?a_id=232
(as far as I know) ALL PlayStation 3 models will play PlayStation One games.
Only PlayStation 3's that offer ***4 USB slots*** have the backward compatibility feature, to play 80-85% of PlayStation 2 games. These include (fat) 20, 40, and 80GB systems. http://us.playstation.com/support/answer/index.htm?a_id=232
These fat PlayStation 3 models need a specific software to allow PlayStation 2 games on the system. Here is a YouTube video to show you where the software is located in the PlayStation Store (no charge): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JGaIK6hmB5A&feature=related
If you have a PlayStation 2 game that you need to make sure if you can play it on your PlayStation 3, here is a link to help you search: http://us.playstation.com/support/compatiblestatus/index.htm
