How to transfer data from one PS3 hard drive to another? My PS3 recently crashed and so I bought a new one. When I installed my old hard drive it prompted me to format the drive. It stated if I do this I will lose my information on the hard drive. How would I go about using the old hard drive in the new system without losing any files?
I still have the old PS3 it just doesn't read discs. How do I backup the information?
And how much space should the device have?

You can't. If you did not do a backup on the old PS3, then you are out of luck.
Putting a new (different) HDD in a PS3 will require a format, just like it said. There is no way around this. This is done for game and video Activation purposes and, and so content will work correctly.
If you can't access the XMB on the old PS3, and/or you didn't do a backup, then you are out of luck.
**EDIT**
To back up the PS3, you will need to put the original HDD back in the PS3 (as long as you didn't format it when in the other PS3). Once you do that, you will need some sort of external device to back it up to (USB flash driver, external HDD, etc.). Whatever you use, make sure it is large enough, or you won't be able to back up (the PS3 will tell you if you have enough room or not).
Once you are ready to back up, go here: XMB > Settings > System Settings > Backup Utility
If you can see the XMB of the old PS3, then you can transfer one PS3 to the other exactly like you currently see it by using the Data Transfer Utility. This requires hooking both PS3 together using an Ethernet cable. You will need to be able to see both PS3s on a screen (either the same TV, or different TVs). Both PS3 will need to be in the Data Transfer Utility screen in order to transfer data: XMB > Settings > System Settings > Data Transfer Utility
The Data Transfer Utility is the best way to go, because it will transfer the PS3 over to the new one exactly. All PSN accounts, all downloaded content, all passwords, everything is transferred over, just as if you were using the old one.
**2nd EDIT**
You can see how much space you will require on the external device by looking at the System Information screen and seeing how much space you have used on the current HDD: XMB > Settings > System Settings > System Information.
The HDD capacity will tell you what you have left out of your total HDD capacity. If it says 70GB / 76GB, then you that means you have used 6GB of the 76GB available (this would be an 80GB PS3), and would need an external device of at least 6GB.
You don't need an external device if you use the Data Transfer Utility (use the same cable for both PS3s if you only have one TV with one set of Inputs).

Man you should have just backed up your old hardrive to an external one. That way you wouldn't have had to transfer the old hardrive into the new one at all. You would have just had to upload the data from the external to the new one. It's always good to have an external HDD on hand and to backup your data every so often. Sorry to say but your data is gone once you have to format.
