in final fantasy ps3 is all your doing is commanding a list of combat moves?played the game last night for about a hour and a half and felt like all i was doing was pressing the x button all the time do you ever fight anyone your self?

You can do that, that's why the ability section is below the Auto-Battle button. Also you have to make correct shifting of Paradigms throughout the harder battles (and trust me a lot of the standard battles can turn harder, so you have to switch them throughout the battles).
