How can you back up a ps3 hard drive if the ps3 is broken? My 40gb ps3 classic recently got the "yellow light of death." I learned recently that if I send it to sony for repair, they usually do not send back the same hard drive. I also learned that if I attempt to hook it up to a new ps3, the hard drive must be reformatted and erased for it to work properly. Does anyone know a way I can keep my saved files? Also, please correct me if any of my information is incorrect.

I'm not sure you'll be able to, but if you look in your manual for procedures concerning sending your system in for repairs it tells you to remove hard drive before sending your system in. That's most likely so you can keep your data if/when they repair your system. If they send you a new system then your game data is pretty much sunk. You may try backing it up to a computer though. Problem with that is trophy data is disabled on copied files that weren't copied from your system backup process.

I know your pain. Unfortunately, there is no way. All of your data is gone. I ran into this myself a few months ago. I would suggest, once you get your new system, backup frequently. I generally run the backup utility, and keep a 32gb flash drive plugged in, once a week.
