No, they dont have the emotion engine which is used to run PS2 games. Sony feels that since between ps2 games and ps3 games 80-90% are ps3. Not only that it makes it cheaper to produce the console.
Its a big turnoff and causes them to lose money. But it's a risk their willing to take.

nope the only PS3 consoles that can play PS2 and PS1 games are the 60gb ones I believe...

Ps3 slim has no backwards compatibility with ps2 games but I think you can play Playstation games on all types of PlayStation 3. Can't wait to get one this Friday. *Looks around* Hey, what is that fat dude doing in my chimney?
