What's up with all the PS3 problems? Is it worth it to buy a refurbished one?I want a PS3, and I'm cheap so I want to buy a refurbished one. Besides, refurbished products are usually just as good as brand new ones, and they're always cheaper. HOWEVER....there have been a ton of problems with PS3's ever since they came out. Are there certain things that have been causing these problems that I can take steps to avoid if I purchase one? Or is it just luck-of-the-draw?

actually the new ps3 slims rarely break. they are designed with shut off features that automatically shut itself off when it gets to hot. as long as u take care of it properly, u wont have any problems, and expect it to work perfectly for 8-10 years.

Hmm not sure what "ton" of problems you are referring to. All I know is out of the 46 million PS3s sold, 14% of them failed while 49 million Xbox 360's sold failed 60% of the time according to international surveys and as admitted by Microsoft themselves in a lawsuit against them.
A large majority of those 14% happen due to carelessness and inadequate ventilation. Xbox fails for no apparent reason just because the insides melt away. That doesn't happen with the PS3.
And FYI, any electronics, be it XBox or PS3 or Wii will always have factory defective units that slip through factory QC's most of the time so that is a give situation there.
To avoid PS3s failing, provide adequate space around it. Preferably use a small crate (one of those DVD crates sold in Walmart) to put your PS3 onto so that the PS3's underbelly will be ventilated adequately or a more expensive alternative will be to buy a turbo intercooler.
Also, do not put your PS3 near anything that may overheat like TV, DVD player, another Xbox etc.
Do not play games like there's no tomorrow. Take a break after every 2-3 hours and have your PS3 "rest" for like 30 mins. However, I usually play my PS3 Slim for 6-10 hours straight without any problems as it has enough ventilation around it and I use the small crate method lol bec. I'm a cheap a$ $ llike you lol.
Refurbished PS3s usually come with a warranty like the new ones and most of them are refurb'd by Sony.

sorry let me start again I've had my slim looked after it perfectly hell i have not even scratched any of the disks but 6 days after my warranty ran out it broke it was a pain because i had to reset the hard drive losing 1600+ songs and 32 movies that i cant get back from the store not saying that this will happen to you my ps3 was great while it lasted and i do not regret getting it
mine i only had for a year but i am still happy that i got it in the first place So yes you should get the refurbished one just make sure that it wasnt a problem reading disk's because thats a ~@?{@+#
